Adult Classes

Classroom rules on the use and management of personal devices are set by each teacher and will vary from class to class. Smartphones may be used on occasion in classrooms for shared activities, such as dictionary usage and Kahoot!

• Students are asked to refrain from using their mobile phones in class, except during activities supervised by the teacher.
• Urgent calls may be taken, but you must ask to be excused from the classroom and must conduct the call outside the room. The call should be brief and your voice must be kept low to avoid disturbing other students.
• Mobile phones must be muted and put away during exams, unless the teacher authorizes their use for an assessment on Exam.net or another approved classroom platform.

Young Learner Classes

Mobile phones pose significant classroom management challenges for teachers and distract young learners who use them unsupervised. Usage is not allowed in young learner classrooms.

• Student usage of mobile phones is strictly prohibited in young learner classes. Mobile phones must be stored and out of sight at all times, may not be held by students, nor placed on desks.
• Teachers may choose to conduct a classroom activity that requires phone usage (e.g. Kahoot). In such cases, the teacher will designate a student leader in each group, who may use a phone for that activity. When the activity is completed, the phone must again be stored.
• If a phone is used without permission, the teacher may confiscate it until the end of class.
